Business men are always looking for good investments and ways to invest towards the future. But as history records worldly investments many times fall through, stock markets crash, natural disasters happen. Life itself also can end at anytime, such seeking for wealth on this earth is like sinking sand. Paul the Apostle here is sharing Timothy to encourage rich believers to ensure they are living in a way with their possessions that they are investing them into eternity. He speaks of a “firm foundation” which is the sure place to invest. Mankind invests great amounts of energy seeking to become wealthy and get ahead in life simply to enjoy those things to themselves. For many to become wealthy requires that you oppress others around you. A strong warning comes from the Lord to such that invest only in this earth existence for themselves: “You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter” (James 5:5). Giving to the poor and needy was the way that Jesus taught by example. Maintaining a heart for the poor of this world is a way to keep from the love of money and seeking gain for yourself. If you see the “coming age” as more important then this brief life on earth you will seek to invest your life and resources as our Lord did.
Almsgiving, distribution of food, serving the sick, were very important elements of the early Church. It was taught that God gave his Son as an expression of love and that when we give to the poor it is simply following that great sacrifice and example of God. Giving to the poor in that way represented and preached the Gospel, in every act of alms to the poor the sacrifice of the Son of God was proclaimed as a free gift of love. Cyprian says, “By almsgiving to the poor, we are lending to God. When it is given to the least, it is given to Christ. Let us consider, beloved brethren, what the congregation of believers did in the time of the apostles. Back then they sold houses a farms and gladly and generously presented proceeds to the apostles, to be distributed to the poor.” When we as believers do any good deed to the poor, needy, and downtrodden, we do an eternal work. Someone who see’s eternity and this world as a passing shadow will serve those who Christ served. A Church that is full of the work of compassion to the needy is sharing the very heart of God. The world looks at the poor as an inconvenience and problem to be solved. The Church looks at the poor as “rich in faith” (James 2:5) and one’s that need God’s grace in the giving of God’s people. Though God is not in need yet he says that when we give to the poor in this earth we lend to him (Proverbs 19:17). When we do good deeds to the poor we serve Christ himself. We will be blessed in that day to hear the words “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat” (Matthew 25:35).
