BUILDING SKILLS vs PASSIVE LEARNING – HOW and WHY you IMPROVE with PRACTICE

Skill building is very different to school learning – something we’ve all been trained in. Skill acquisition is a very active, hands-on type of training, requiring strategy, deliberate practice, reflection and lots of repetition. It’s very different to the more passive way of learning, or just memorizing, that school often promotes. Learning how to build skills will improve your art and is an invaluable skill in life.

23:35 – Homework! Are you a "Theorist" or a *"Grinder"*? Are you spending most of your time in reading and endless tutorial watching (me!) or are you mechanically repeating things, infinitely, and with no clear goal (me again!) To build skills you need to have something to adapt to – a concrete goal – and you need to be focused and on task to make sure you're getting closer and closer to the goal. Share below, if you feel it, how you can implement the concepts of skill building in your own practice! Don't forget – it's all about the brain!

Your videos have inspired me to start working on my drawing skills since sometime in February. I haven't been consistent but I've been putting in some work, I've even attempted a portrait of a friend and since then others have seen it and paid me to do portraits of them. I didn't even know that I could do even a tiny bit of portrait drawing. I'm nowhere close to being good but I'm going to continue to work on my craft.

I am both 🙂 depends of the day. Sometimes i just grind it, and sometimes i am just a lazy reader/watcher. Nice video man, like your way of thinking.
I am using Trello and a system since last year to be more goal oriented and have a clear vision. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7JZ3ucaWZ0oSXdUMDE5OXMzQW8/view?fbclid=IwAR19ohyWQMaKXqtiw6U8j0gHanr4yJjyt10p_7BUQUwV0S5O-hjFCAz9rao

Your channel is an inspiration man! Can you do an update about how you've made money and structured your daily life over the past years? I watched your first videos on the subject and am curious how you progressed.

I spent to much time on practice and to little time on theory xD

In an up coming video could you address these points:
• What are the minimal learnable units I should start with?
• Which 20% of the units should I focus on in order to get 80% of the outcome I want?
• In what order should I learn those units?

Thank you for the video!I'm really in a weird place right now. I've decided to walk the path of art couple of years ago and I've gotten better in a way but it's not enough, it's not want my art to be and the more I try and fail the more all this seems pointless. It's kind of like shooting blindly at a target range, I don't know what I'm actually doing. It's frustrating too because I've lived a very undisciplined life up until now with many attempts to make changes but always failing after a period of time …… Read more »

This applies to anything. For me, I realized I'm a theorist.. I own almost 200 books on a small variety of topics. I like learning but I also think my excessive reading is just "productive" procrastination. I'm afraid to really jump into my writing. Maybe I don't think others, especially my family and people who've met me, will approve (and I know, "fuck what others think" but still).

So, ya. Thanks for this video. Theoretically, I understand the need for practicality.

I made it to the end, are we best friends now? hahaIn your videos you clearly say what I learned through all those years of self-taught, it's awesome.I still have tons of trouble trying to reach the level I want and it really (sorry for the term) pisses me off lol. Improving is a pain, even if you know how to, even if you improved before, there are always some doubts putting you down like "you're not improving", "you aren't learning correctly", "what you draw is bad, just as usual" etc.I'm clearly disappointed because I wish I could have a… Read more »

i think if one knows the final resault before he begins to do it is a much efficient way to create art work. He doesnt need to practice 100 times and fail 99 to get the right final resault. especially applied to what someone is doing is not a new scientific discovery.
