Busting pro-war propaganda: What China is really like

Red Lines host Anya Parampil speaks with Danny Haiphong, a contributing editor at the Black Agenda Report, about his recent two week trip to China. Danny discusses what he learned about China’s economic model, it’s efforts to reduce poverty nationwide, and his experience in Xinjiang, the province where western media, politicians, and human rights groups claim Beijing is housing millions of Muslims in concentration camps. Did Danny see any evidence of this policy, and what do average Chinese people think about the claims?

It is disturbing to see a clown like this brought on and given a platform to demonstrate nothing but his own ignorance and the propaganda line that he bought.

There is a densely populated concentration, but not in China. A place called Gaza.

If China is as tyrannical as the US politicians had claimed.. than how do they explain the (annual) 150 million Chinese tourists who travel internationally and return to China thereafter.. ??!!
If US politicians are correct, they should receive 150 million Chinese seeking political asylum every year.. !!!!! But that didn't happen at all.. !!!

Much respect for Anya and Danny; this reportage concerning the social, political and economic environment in China is appreciated. It is necessary however, to consider the fallacy of meritocracy, absent of egalitarianism, that is emerging in China. While the Central government is indeed working to elevate the standard of living for its citizens, the consequence of it's policies is also creating a plutocrat class within, the beneficiaries of which have access to opportunity that is well beyond the reach of the majority population. More billionaires have emerged in China throughout the past two decades, than anywhere else in the world.… Read more »

Why doesn't the world sanction the U.S.?

Our country sanctions other countrys that kill thousands of kids. Perhaps a million dead from the Iraq sanctions And the sanctions are for selfish, economic reasons. Any other country, including China, do this?

Thank you, at least a new generation of intellectual young people in the US will stand up against all the subtle propaganda that defends a lost hegemony.

It is sad when critical journalism fails in a massive way like this. Those critical of American/western imperialism need to maintain a semblance of awareness and a critical eye for all things and not veer so far into being critical of America and the west that they lean into sopping up and and uncritically repeating propaganda from the CCP or any other state. Critical thinking must be kept and applied to all even those that may oppose the US or Western imperialism and hegemony.

End of interview he talks about the prevalence of market forces but earlier he spoke about a command or planned economy . Lol. Which is it ? Big mistake using the words planned or command economy.

*even though people own the land there is no private land ownership in China * he says. Lol so they own it but they don't own it. Check …Got it….Makes sense. So what you meant is that all land is owned by the state and people have the right to use it for defined periods. Try not to contradict yourself and get your ideas out.

His naive belief in Chinese propaganda is beyons the pale. Has he ever read any critical work of Chinese intellectuals.? Few Chinese even buy into his idealistic views of the Chinese state and its systems

When the cold war came to an end there had to be something to replace it to keep the people fearful and in line, so they dreamed up new 'bogeymen' countries and climate hysteria.

Just to add you MurKKKa does NOT have guaranteed privet ownership of land or otherwise because back in 2012, an Executive Order 13603 of March 16, 2012

china is a mixed bag. it’s a first world , third world country still developing. Extremely backward due to rapid progress. If you travel thru the tier 1 cities like shenzhen or beijing you will not experience what most of china is like. And government crackdowns turn lazy corruption into rapid paced authoritarianism. the legal system is heavily based on bribery, and mediation over tea. Also chinese people are incredibly racist, in general…and ccp propaganda is much worse than western propaganda. also the turkish ughyrs, tibetans, and other non han chinese are hated/oppressed. And if you go there you better… Read more »

A two-week trip IS not a very qualified opinion, especially if you only go to top tier cities and especially if they just talk to common indoctrinated people who speak more from opinion than qualified knowledge. I have been watching vlogging content from someone who lived there for ~14 years (SerpentZA), and that's much more insightful. Because the risk is to glorify the CCP just because they're under attack by ideological enemies, but China is about to become the replacement for the USA. It has many very worrying problems. They are not to be commended, especially since the mass murderer… Read more »

Yes, we all know about US imperialism and that Trump is ridiculous (it's not just in China that he would never have got a look into any govt. position! Only the US) – but this guy is still talking about "the Revolution" and seems to me to be the perfect advocate for Chinese imperialism. Since when has China ever been interested in "cultural exchange" with other peoples (except as a cover for more economic & geopolitical power)? And apart from your little tourist's view of Xinjiang, how about a bit more substantial info about the alleged concentration camps etc? You… Read more »

It's more of an international, corporate empire though, isn't it? It's just that the USA produces the most taxes than any other country, which makes it a much better investment for private entities to exploit, over any other country.

In U.S. and Canada you own your home so call own your property. In reality you dont own the land, you rent it from municipal . It call 'property tax' . If you dont pay your property tax see if you still can walk into through your front door with the sheriff infront of it with gun draw poiting at your face. and If you late on payment, late fee and interest slap on you.

The United States has the most powerful advantage to lead the world, but its political system is capitalism. In kal Marx's theory, this system will eventually be swallowed up by unstopeable corruption and greed. and Chinese believe that the prediction of capitalism‘s end is scientific, and finally choose socialism.

If China really cared about advancing people's quality of life they wouldn't have a class system with selected few at the top with billions of dollars.

To defend legitimate interests of China in an era of a declining 'liberal hegemony' is commendable. To make the present 'security competition' between what Orwell called 'Oceania' and 'East Asia' appear as a conflict of ideology is a regressive analysis. The economy of China is not a 'planned economy' whith fixed prices and centrally organized production quotas , despite the fact that the leninistic Communist Party of China plays the role of central banking in the West, influencing economic and social development via a macro-economic framework (e.g. depreceating the 'Yuan' as long as possible in order to increase exports). None… Read more »

Really? China's totally not oppressing Uighurs because you saw some stuff translated into their language, and there were people dancing in the streets? Rock-solid evidence and "research" if I ever saw it. I guess there's just a massive conspiracy perpetrated by every news organization on the planet with the resources to investigate this because racism and capitalism is evil. I wonder if the Hong Kong protesters are all just CIA operatives trying to undermine the benevolent and generous Central Government. Also, capitalist mass surveillance is evil, and communist mass surveillance is good. I know because this guy asked some people… Read more »
