Can We Travel Faster Than Light? with Dr. Miguel Alcubierre

Can humanity build an Alcubierre warp drive?
Can we go faster than light?

Dr. Miguel Alcubierre was inspired by Star Trek the Next Generation’s example of warp drive faster than light technology on the starship Enterprise. In 1994 he wrote a paper on how we could bend and warp space and time to travel faster than light within the rules of Einstein’s general relativity. NASA has and is currently exploring if it is possible to bend the fabric of space and achieve hyper fast space travel with the Eagle Works lab. John Michael Godier spoke with Dr. Miguel Alcubierre on the feasibility of the Alcubierre warp drive and if there has been any developments within physics, including the use of dark matter or dark energy, and anti-gravity, to be able to make this possible.

This episode is a bit special. While Dr. Avi Loeb was the first guest we emailed and recorded with and the first episode of Event Horizon. Dr. Miguel Alcubierre was the second person we reached out to. This week also marks the unofficial one year anniversary of the creation of the show. So thank you all for watching, liking, and enjoying what we do. We appreciate your support.

i say we need to push our mind to limits to solve this problem and put our computational power to solve this problem.

This theory depends on gravity itself to travel faster than light. Is there any evidence that it can? Note that everything discussed in here is theory. So you are stacking theories on theories to come up with a new theory. ELECTRIC UNIVERSE makes way more sense than this mumbo jumbo. Super fun speculation though.

I wish you asked him "Would super massive black holes release an ever decreasing amount of Hawkins radiation?" Suggesting the black holes would never "burn-out"….

Joel Kemp

It sounds to me like super massive black holes would not release much hawkins radiation, being pulled (by the ever increasing gravity) into the event horizon (The more massive, the less energy is released). This suggests the heat death of the universe would take an ever increasing amount of time, maybe approaching infinity….

North Korea is the only country currently using moder nuclear fusion technology, they are also working on a warp drive concept for the peoples liberation starfleet of North Korea.

Creation itself gave every tool in disposal for the universe to begin and create life itself so IT can learn and keep evolving so IT can learn too from the shear amount off lifetimes every spirit have to go through and learn true knowledge, wisdom, compassion, responsibility, neutral thinking, love, universal laws and to question everything around us, it is what make us to be human, constant wonder, asking yourself who and what we are , there is no limits in what Creation can be or come up with at any time at least to our very limited knowledge, Creation… Read more »

The Monopole field spinning up time but going no where,> But when.in time? HG Wells.< Anti Gravity the forces are equal to the gravitational attraction or depth in space time where again its not where your going but when in space time. Anyways it hurts my head alot.

No! humans are to primitive, we can't even get to space without blowing ourselves up. even if we didn't blow up the planet making a machine to go the speed of light our brains couldn't keep up and we would crash the thing in less then a millisecond lol

black holes are created from dark matter one needs to return to the befor the big bang and that which exists as dark matter quantum invisible energy the implosion of quantum energy exerts the need to harness
yes we can travel faster than light dark energy after light particles have being disintergrated the energy leftover can be harnessed with the assistance of negative energy

We may not know the "trick" to get it to work, but something like this is not only possible, but hardware that does it has already been made – I've seen them.
It's like flight…people knew it was possible but it took a loooooong time for someone to blunder across the right cross-sectional wing design + the right kind of power generation system (internal combustion engine) for human flight to become a reality.
Something like this IS possible, it HAS been done…we NEED to figure it out too.

Who needs to travel faster than light? I'd be more than happy to manage 99.9%.

Guest contradicts himself. If everything in not moving in the bubble or moving on regular speed then all light and all stuff once gets to the bubble will start move on regular speed as nothing happened.

We already have. The Key is in the make up of each planet at its core. Tune in to the frequency and it will attract or reflect a said object. On the level of a grain of sand on beach ball.

Since speed is all relative, how could the speed limit exist? What point do you measure speed from? 2 things moving half the speed of light away from each other would be going the speed of light relative to each other..

If it is in fact possible, we probably won't see it in our generation as there is so much design and testing to do with our current levels of technology, it would cost many billions to try and implement.
The craft itself would have to be much stronger than anything we currently have available.

Say two men bet on a race. One had a mechanism based on quantum entanglement, to punch a hole in spacetime and leave the world and travel all the way around the universe , to eventually come right back to the exact same starting place. The other decided to remain at rest and was there , in the beginning and at the end, without exertion. The one who moved about , achieved nothing further than the man who remained at rest. The one who remained at rest never lost sight of the mobile man. Who won the bet ?

Before this could happen we humans still needs to evolve even more to have the necessary intelligence to comeup with a solution.

If it was ever possible, surely people from the future would have gone back in time to meet at least Jesus if no one else, and we would know about it. So i reckon it will never be possible or feasible. I'm sorry to let you down. Maybe it's my thought that will prevent this from happening.

By the way, you could reach the edge of the universe with that warp drive… then what? Do you just stop??

This is great, love hearing about the possibilities and of course the limitations of space exploration 🙂 I'm still very angry about the money men thinking space is a waste of money though. When we should already have a base on the moon, sending parts and supplies there through robotics. Thus developing not only the space program and robotics but also making it cheaper. So all of your spacecraft launches could be done from the moon, no need for huge expensive rockets.
Sorry to change the subject, Awesome video 🙂

Yeah, light speed or even 10-20 times light speed is not enough. Our galaxy alone is 100,000 light years across, we would be able to explore our closest star systems, but no further. On the other hand, our current science based on Einstein's theory could be completely wrong, or missing parts crucial to traveling the universe.

The time travel machine segment left me thinking about the fact that if you have a machine that can travel back and create a sort of a "pitch loop" as professor Miguel describes, where the amount of energy concentrated is so big… maybe that could be, theoretically, an infinite source of energy.

Thermodynamics kicks the door

It sounds like in relation to backward time travel – Physicists do not want it to exist rather than it cannot.

But why do you need to expand space behind you? Can't you just contract the space in front of you and then move into that direction? Then you can travel faster than light as well without needing negative energy.
