I'm 2nd generation American and even I don't quite know who I am. Yeah, I do feel American, but I also feel like I really don't belong here and that I should be back home where my family came from. I feel like I've been completely cut off from my cultural heritage. I know barely anything other than "Yeah, I'm from this place". Other than that, there's a total disconnect. My parents never tried to teach me anything about where our family is from. being around my great aunt and uncle is really the closest I ever truly feel to… Read more »

One last comment on this. This is interesting because as a mixed raced guy with 77%Black, 17%White, and 6% Asian DNA, people have a tendency to only communicate with me as a "Black" person instead of just a person. This means, always trying to see what Rap music I listen to, when I barely listen to it. Or only communicate with me when they want to share a Black comedian with me, or a Black actor or Black politician, etc. Or share a Black movie. They seem to have no clue that I'm not 100% Black, and I'm not at… Read more »

Interesting that none of these immigrants are from Europe, like Iceland. Jubilee seems to have specifically picked non-white people. It would have been more of a learning experience to see what an immigrant from say, Sweden, feels versus an immigrant from Iraq. Or an immigrant from Spain versus an immigrant from Mexico.

When Jubilee starts this off with aiming their message to "Good Humans", I'm curious on who are they're talking about? Democrats? Vegan's? I'd like to think that they're talking about human beings, but I have a suspicion that "Good Human" to them means very specific people with specific traits, and the rest are supposedly the evil humans. It just sounds like a strange label. Also, just about everyone thinks they are the "Good Guys", no matter how vile they may appear to be from another person or groups perspective.

The one question that I would have is why do you feel bad that you aren't enough of your original culture. You shouldn't feel bad this is America you can have whatever culture you want to. Idk why people hold on to their culture in a free country. Be your own person dont listen to other people be your own culture. If you want to embrace your culture I get it. But if your getting shut out from those same people and getting made fun of by people in your own culture. You can find people that will accept you.… Read more »

As a first generation Cuban American, it was quite healing for me to watch this. This was the first time I ever hear other first generation children talk about their experiences and I could relate. I wanted to add that I never felt American until I did mission work overseas for two years. When I came back, it was a reverse culture shock, but I felt I could bring something that I didn’t have before. I never really felt Cuban or American, but America is founded on people who brought the uniqueness of their cultures. Mine is a mixed culture… Read more »

My parents are immigrant and them and everyone else keeps wanting to instill their culture and stuff into me but I really care or want to give any mind to them. I want nothing to do with that stuff and you can call me Amercanized or ignorant and tell me its important to know and be connected to my roots but I found no real reason to do so for myself. I've even been called white washed and not black but it ok and I accept it call my self an oreo and dark white trying to really not answer… Read more »

I relate to this video even though I've never been to the US because, knowing how to speak English, I see that Italian and specifically Sicilian culture is so much less open than English language cultures that sometimes it's hard not to notice it every day.

The terminology in this video is so wrong! The minute these 'immigrant parents' came to live in the US, they were the 1st generation. Please think next time.

To the Nigerian Cameroonian woman, hitting your kids is not reserved to only Nigerian culture it is pervasive throughout the world including the US. Then you asked is the only way to stay connected through generational connections, no but trying to learn the language is. I’m first generation Nigerian and I try my hardest to start connected with aunts uncles cousins who are still there. You have to stay connected. What will you pass down about your cultures to your kids so that it is still celebrated?
