Empress Masako and the pressure of Japan's throne – BBC News

Empress Masako is only the second woman to become empress of Japan, after her husband Naruhito took the Chrysanthemum Throne.

The pressures of royal life took a considerable toll on her and she struggled publicly with mental health, but now seems to be getting to be getting a chance to put her extensive diplomacy skills to use.

Once the Emperor’s father dies, both she and he will step down and the current emperor’s son will then take over, correct? Because his brother has the son?

(It’s a good thing their mother had “The Heir and the Spare”!)

I find Her Majesty so beautiful. She's not the generic Japanese beauty, she is more like of a Southeast Asian kind of features to me. So cute!

She's perfect. But I think that by marrying a crowned prince, she missed her life and the opportunity to have an excellent career in politics (brilliant studies) rather than being known only as "someone's wife".

I am very proud. I did not know that the Empress has such an important role after WW2, when the U.S. changed the Empire of Japan completely

I love Japan but it's a terrible place to be a woman. I wouldn't live there for the way they treat women.

Wow those females seem to have trouble getting pregnant. Sad to be only child. President Trump is probably the only high official to have 5 children.

In the past, there was friction between her and the Imperial Office.
He publicly made a statement to protect her.
The public was surprised.
And we thought he was the best husband.

She would be a hero if she ran a nation wide massive campaign through all the prefectures towns and islands about why mental health care is something that you shouldn’t be ashamed of or feel bad about going. Everyone needs a little help sometimes.

Mental health issues do not necessarily mean mental illness. I do wish i understood more of Japanese Imperial culture. The new Empress appears to be poised to fulfill Her destinies. She has beautifully shaped eyes.
