In light of the recent Kong Kong protests happening in right now, this video will shed light on Hong Kong history from the British colonial period to the present and provide context for recent Hong Kong news.

In our previous video, we discussed the development of Hong Kong ( HK ) throughout the history of ancient China. In this video, we will capture the history of Hong Kong ( HK ) from the last Imperial dynasty of the Chinese Qings ceding control of the region to the British who would rule until 1997 when the territory passed back to China as a Special Administrative Region.

This video on Hong Kong history will discuss the following topics:

1. Ruling Colonial Hong Kong: Organization and administration of the crown colony of Hong Kong
2. Transforming Hong Kong: Influence of western ideas through education and the expansion of its population and economy
3. The Toll of War: Hong Kong through the conflicts of WW1 and WW2
4. Post War Chaos: Communist revolution and the start of the Cold War
5. Post War Recovery: Economic miracle that transformed Hong Kong into a jewel of the east
6. Final Days of British Empire Rule: British Colonial government implements many changes to improve the colony and solidify their influence
7. Transfer to China: Talks about the future of Hong Kong with the Sino-British Joint Declaration in 1984 and the passing of the Basic Law in 1990
8. Special Administrative Region of China: Handover ceremonies to transfer Hong Kong to China and its status as a Special Administrative Region

You made a mistake. Mao killed millions and millions, not thousands. He’s the most evil man that’s ever lived.

No less than three mentions are made of “income inequality”. Income when derived through corruption and thievery is simply a crime. But if there is a reasonably fair way to make a living and excel, income is based on supply and demand. So while the world is never a perfect place, a society that leaves the possibility for anyone to succeed is not inherently unequal. Of course, those who lack drive or capability to succeed will likely not do so. But the only way to make income equal to all wether you toil or not would technically be Communism. That… Read more »

Under British colonial law, Hong Kong had no democracy. However, people of Hong Kong would not be jailed, become forced slave labor, be a subject of organ harvested, and sent to the educational camp because of criticizing the British government.

One thing that you need to re-illiterate is that Hong Kong's transition from manufacturing to financial hub did not happen after the handover. It happened earlier after the declaration was signed in 1984 when Deng Xiao Ping announced economic reform in the Mainland. He created irresistible trade deals that attract factories from HK (then the rest of the world soon after) to move into mainland, hence why everything is now made in China. So the HK Government transformed the city into Financial hub to sustain its economy. Millions lost their jobs in the process because labour skills couldn't be transferred,… Read more »

For very dexterious nations like Chinese citizens, getting capitalism and libertarianism notions from England, British Kingdom has been the cornerstone to found one of the best countries in the world, hong kong , always number 1 to form company at its easiest in the world and continue to grow making trade and investment in other parts of the world in the tax free Hong Kong. Going back to Chinese authoritarian rulings and much lower wages and state ruling hybrid capitalism communism styles not giving enough attention to human beings, for the next Hong Kong nations , it is like a… Read more »

If Peking is really Beijing then what is Nanking? It's Nanjing and always was! Similarly the people of Zhongguo aka China began to have their first national language, putonghua, after 1949. Mandarin Chinese language only existed in the minds of the British conquerors, yet the language of the Emperors was from Shandong, actually Shandong dialect. Western students enrol in colleges/universities to learn Mandarin when it is actually Putonghua. Some go to Zhongguo aka China to use their so called Mandarin and have to learn putonghua to be able to communicate with the people who live there. Your videos about Hong… Read more »

Thank you so much for your brilliant work 👍🏽

Really appreciate your research & craft making this video documentary of Hong Kong!

Just a note that the Handover date was on 1st July 1997 (instead of 1st June in the v.o.) Well done!

Hope we'll see the light again & recover as a society soon 🙏🏼✨God bless 🌇

The history of Hong Kong is quite interesting as Sir Henry Pottinger was appointed as the first Governor of Hong Kong, where he had been instrumental in ending the First Opium War in China through the Treaty of Nanking, 1842. He served as Governor from 1843 to 1844. His son Sir Frederick Pottinger was an Australian police inspector during the bushranger wars in NSW 1860-1865 and was a magistrate during the Chinese riots at Lambing Flat sentencing many Europeans to gaol for beating up and killing Chinese gold miners in 1860. However, today and sadly Hong Kong does not enjoy… Read more »

Some of these comments are quite sad. Discrimination is very weak and small minded. Do not get tricked into participating in the “divide and conquer” strategy. Be wiser than that.

The main concern here is that how everyday Hong Kongers would cope under a totally new system by 2047? Just what is the strategy here by the protestors to manifest the vision what Hong Kong should be like within China? Can Hong Kong and Taiwan have rights in the near future? Could there be WW3 over these disputes on HK and Taiwan? Will China tarnish Traditional Chinese Culture once in for all? Will Chinese people be able to speak up? Hong Kong works really well under 'one country and two system', if it ends, will Hong Kong be going backwards,… Read more »

Conclusion: Handing over a free and prospering Hong Kong to China was the single biggest mistake in Britain's post war history. The freedom of the proud people of Hong Kong will soon be crushed by the Red Dragon and its insatiable drive for global dominance. I pray for the hard working, freedom loving people of Hong Kong who over the years and decades achieved so much and are now in such danger as the Red Dragon and its troops are already literally waiting at the gates of Hong Kong! Courage, my friends!!! The world is watching.

Hong Kong's prosperity was largely built on China, more accurately isolated China. HK used to control majority of the Chinese import and export. While China is opening up in the last 30 years, HK has been losing its unique trading advantage. HK's relative decline is inevitable.

here is what really happened; white people came, invaded, conquered, took a piece of land through military power, then gave it back while secretly setting HK into a path of independence eventually hoping it would be a country of its own, used to contain Chinese on the south side. White people already got bases in South Korea and Japan, so naturally HK is a great place to set up some military base from ground invasion when needed. you can argue a lot of things happened resulted in such condition but what happened is what happened. When did HK ever have… Read more »

Could have been less propaganda. Makes it sound like the British were angels who graced us with their glorious gifts, when in fact they were colonizers who treated us like second class citizens, and that any rebellion attacked “foreigners” for no reason. But I guess this is what your audience wants to hear…

Informative video. But your comment in minute 22 is misleading. Hong Kong won't become "officially incorporated into Chinese territory" in 2047. I think you mean Hong Kong's status as an SAR expires then. Hong Kong already is a part of Chinese territory. Indeed the official position is that Hong Kong has always been a part of China. And the government of China resumed exercising sovereignty over it in 1997.

Hong Kong really is quite the miracle thanks to the British. The region is basically a rock with no natural resources to speak of and yet has the freest economy in world according to the economic freedom index, has some of the best education on the planet, and is one of the freest, low crime countries in the world. It's to bad communist China will just crush them and they can't really be supported by the US or UK since that would be WWIII; so I guess enjoy it while it lasts.

What was expected of Hong Kong in the way of assimilation after the 50 years from the treaty? Would it be just another communist Chinese city with all property owed by the government and no freedom of religion or self rule?

Invicta, you skipped the part where the communist support rose out of the chaos and massive human rights abuses of the kmt run warlord era(standard euphamism of capitalist era, as post qing nobles became defacto capitalist bosses) the communist party of china, as the communist party USA or any other communist party rose to seek democratic electoral victory. but like Bernie, communists are not allowed in general elections because they would obviously win in a starving country. not allowing this special politcal party in the electoral wasnt enough, they must be executed as communists party members in america are persecuted… Read more »

Disliked due to the fact i saw some bias. it mentioned about IJA's atrocities, the communist's anti movement but not an ounce of the colonizer's atrocities which when u track india's history under colonial rule, you see there's massacre conducted by the colonizer after WW2, the treatment of colonies had significantly improved. all thanks to Germany showing how to treat their colonies that they weren't different from those long-time colonizers as for the extradition bill, if you are anti, then you are just saying let these criminals take a safe refugee. this also gives China the ability to protect themselves… Read more »
