How ‘Medicare for All’ Could Wreck America’s Health Care System and Its Economy—Chris Jacobs

Just who are the winners and who are the losers in a single-payer healthcare system?

In the eyes of Chris Jacobs, what major problems exist in the universal healthcare systems in Canada and the UK?

How would “Medicare for All” affect wait times and access to treatment, especially for people who need more specialized care?

And what kinds of marketplace distortions and perverse incentives might result?

This is American Thought Leaders 🇺🇸, and I’m Jan Jekielek.

Today, guest host Joshua Philipp, who hosts our new channel, Crossroads, sits down with Chris Jacobs, author of “The Case Against Single Payer: How ‘Medicare for All’ Will Wreck America’s Health Care System―And Its Economy.” Jacobs is also the founder and CEO of Juniper Research Group.

We discuss how, in Jacobs’ eyes, “Medicare for All” would increase wait times, lead to more fraud and corruption, and hurt senior citizens as well as society’s sickest and most vulnerable.

We also look at how 71% of Americans would actually pay more under Bernie Sanders’ single-payer healthcare plan, according to analysis conducted by Emory University professor Kenneth Thorpe.

It's easy to crawl into the socialist rat hole. Getting back out is pretty much impossible without a lot of carnage.

people would sell their soul to the billionaires for riches, but they will not get those riches in heaven, these people would much rather see people die to protect the billion dollars in profits in health care,

Healthcare In this country needs to be imploded. It is corrupt from top to bottom. What must happen is a health care needs to be just that. Not insurance care. Costs must be brought in line. People gouging and stealing must be prosecuted and jailed

Problems for American health care : huge malpractice settlements, and therefore insurance demands from every doctor, therefore scarcity of doctors (so many problems discouraging potential health care workers.) Pumped up prices for pharmaceuticals, fraud on the system,
and emergency demands by unpaid/foreign persons.

Medicare is crap. I've worked all my life and my money has paid for Medicare and it's limited. I have to buy a supplemental policy to make it work. Bernie needs to run some scenarios and see what HE gets for single payor providers. Assh0le.

It is factual that probably no company can outcompete the govt on price. But buyer beware. Having administered the medicaid system, not every treatment is covered & not all docs participate b/c reimbursement rates are low so this limits your choice on healthcare profs, meds, durable medical equipment, therapy. Virtually no dentist participates. The couple that do end up creating a long queu for months. Shrinks ask too much so you can't find a shrink. Most PTs don't participate. AKA shortage.

A friend while traveling in London took a fall and broke his arm. This was on a Sunday. He went to the big hospital and they were closed on Sunday! How demonic is that? He had to take a train out of town to another clinic for his care.

Let me straighten you out on a few things. Single payer works except for medical egos. Super piss poor organization and pathetic use of thirty year old tech disguised in modern equipment cases. Using Black and White ultrasound is tantamount to using a crank on a motion picture camera. On any given day at least sixty five percent are left idle on a par with the idleness of all the other equipment. In China you walk into a hospital tell the doctor through a translator what you think is wrong they send you to coloured ultrasound room and you are… Read more »

aingle-payer works fine at taiwan. doctors at taiwan makes about 100,000~200,000 USD/year, pretty good income here. but you also need to implement some kind of health tax.

well in my country. NZ we have single payer (if I understands the term to mean paid for by govt from the tax take) health care and have had it all my life. Our system is not wrecked, and I am perfectly happy with it and at my age of nearly 61 it has served me in latter years now that i need it. I have no health insurance and reject the notion outright. and believe it or not NZ is not a socialist sh*t hole. I saw a specialist just yesterday for an ongoing condition. it cost nothing you… Read more »

A lot of Americans do not have insurance. A lot of Americans with private insurance have high co-pays and deductibles. What happens is that they do not go to the Dr anymore for regular checkups. They don't get preventative care. They wait until they are on death's doorstep to go to the Dr. Then, the costs are higher because the patients are sicker. Preventative care would actually help decrease American Health Care costs. People don't find out they have diabetes, they wind up losing limbs or destroying their kidneys. Then those people wind up on disability and the government has… Read more »

The reality of the situation is this. Regardless of the health care system provided the elites will NEVER use what we must, how many politicians use/used obama care? It is about control plain and simple. If you look at all the new policies they are talking about; climate change, gun control, health care, green foods, smart everything, they ALL do the same thing, they give the Gov. more control over our lives. We are rapidly reaching critical mass, in the event Trump does not prevail in 2020, well obama said it best, "America will be fundamentally changed forever". I do… Read more »

I have a better solution. You can Get Car Insurance online or anywhere and will cover you even if you kill someone lol. Why can't you get healthcare across a State line? Even After ACA Some states only have one Healthcare provider. They can charge whatever they want! Watch my video on this solution.

I live in Canada and I have never experienced refusal of services. My husband died of a variety of issues and because his issues were acute again services where never withheld and he never faced excessive wait times. This happens in none acute situations but not acute. Canada may not be perfect but as my husband issues increased I was very thankful I was not paying out of pocket for his treatments.

You cannot rely on private health insurance. You fricken people keep pushing that crap. The fact is….ONE MAJOR ILLNESS will offsett several lifetimes of premiums. EVERYBODY will have a major illness. IDIOTS. I do not have the answer…but profit on "medical insurance" is an impossibility!

And where is Healthcare an enumerated power of the Federal Government?
Additionally, when was Article VI amended (This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof,…., shall be the supreme Law of the Land;……, Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding…….The Senators and representatives……shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution;) ?

The healthcare system we have now is not sustainable. At least in Canada everyone is covered and if you get sick, you won't go bankrupt and lose your house. The really poor people already get Medicaid, Medicare for All would help the Middle class who already pay full rate for insurance and will lose everything if they get really sick.

Medicare is already stretched to thin; with rising costs of hospitals. We need to lower rising costs of medical care. Most importantly to cover those and only those that have paid into the system.

My present premiums in British Columbia is $32.50 a month. I also do not believe government should be a service provider but should develop a quality assurance framework. It is not true that you cannot pay out of pocket for private health care. There are a variety of surgeries and procedures that you can pay out of pocket for. Province to province can be different but costs can be transferred to the patients home province.
