Iranian Health Ministry spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour كيانوش جهانپور said on Sunday that the total number of Coronavirus cases in the country has reached 38,309.
“With 123 new deaths in the past 24 hours, the death toll from the virus has reached 2,640. Unfortunately, we had 2,901 new cases since yesterday,” Jahanpour said on state TV.
He also put the number of those who have so far recovered from the viral infection at 12,391.
The ministry spokesman said on Saturday that the country was developing a treatment method that could help prevent the spread of the novel Coronavirus, or COVID-19, with the help of stem cells.
The Coronavirus outbreak that originated in Wuhan, China, has infected over 672,000 people around the world. The global death toll from the pandemic is now more than 31,000.
Over 58 million people have so far beenscreened by Iranian specialists and under the supervision of the country’s headquarters tasked with battling the Coronavirus, Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri سرلشگر پاسدار محمد حسين باقري said during a meeting on Sunday.
He expressed hope that the entire Iranian nation will be screened in the coming days.
Noting that the Armed Forces have made all the necessary arrangements to stem the outbreak, the top general said more than 4,000 beds have been prepared across the country for patients if the need arises.
In an edict to Major General Baqeri earlier this month, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei علي خامنه اي emphasized the need for the establishment of a “health and treatment base” to prevent further spread of the ongoing epidemic in the country.
“While commending the services that the Armed Forces have so far provided to the dear people (of Iran), and while emphasizing the need for those services to further expand and continue, it is necessary that these services be organized in the form of a health and treatment base,” the Leader wrote in his edict.
“In addition to establishing such treatment facilities as field hospitals and infirmaries, and so forth, you must focus on prevention of further spread of this disease through necessary means as well,” Ayatollah Khamenei added.
The spokesman for Iran’s Health Ministry said the country is developing a treatment method that could help prevent the spread of the novel Coronavirus, or COVID-19, with the help of stem cells.
“This is not a drug but a method which uses mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) to treat Coronavirus (patients),” Kianoush Jahanpour said on Saturday.
He further underlined the method is a type of cell therapy that is still in the study phase.
The remarks came after some local reports said that Iranian stem cell scientist Dr. Masoud Soleimani پزشك مسعود سليماني, who returned home in December last year following his release from a US prison, has developed the first experimental coronavirus medicine.
Later, Soleimani rejected the reports as inaccurate, explaining that he and his research team were using mesenchymal stem cells to modify the immune response in patients suffering from the virus.
“I emphasize that this is a research-therapeutic approach,” he said.
The research is being conducted with the support of the Health Ministry at Shariati hospital بيمارستان شريعتي and Masih Daneshvari hospital بيمارستان مسيح دانشوري, Soleimani said.
The results of the first phase of its clinical trial will be announced soon, he added.
