Hey, I'm a socialist Latinx thinking about getting into content creation. I was originally inspired by Oliver and Natalie, but having watched a steering of videos starting with Blaques… I'm definitely willing to put in the work to start putting stuff out there. I'd really like to talk about leftism in a critical from a philosophical / political science / metamodernist pov. I'm going to check out the discord server Angie mentioned, but if you have any other suggestions about where I could begin? I have a phone to record with, but that's all…

Sad and pathetic smear…There are minority leftie youtubers you probably just don't know them. The ones on the right are mostly uncle Tom figures who talk shit on their own race to score cheap points with actual racists.

So one point that keeps being brought up is that suggesting youtubers is gate keeping or that it's wrong but also its hard to find leftist youtubers, almost everyone i've found has been through word of mouth from other youtubers, like i started this journey on media (mostly cartoon) analysis videos until i found myself in lefttube, i had no idea who contrapoints was or any of the giant big people, (is jose really big??? idk) but jose was my intro because he's the bridge between media and politics and then thought slime and then angie and i slowly started… Read more »

its weird coming from kat's video to this one, because kat was very frustrated and made lots of wonderful points but couldn't seem to find the reason behind the why, yet here angie just flat out gives the reason, and at least for me angie's reason makes perfect sense, of course i'm a leftist so my world view is closer aligned to angie's but as soon as angie said i was like "oh yeah duh, that's why"

What black people say UK has no racism or not as big of a racist system? Most Black people don't even know anything about anything outside of the US. So most of us wouldn't even speak on other countries. And you're trying to do this intersectional argument about her not mentioning other groups and that's silly. She can't spend an hour including everyone. That's a different discussion. Her main focus was to talk about Left Tube being super white and some of her own personal issues. Asking or expecting her to think about everyone else is a waste of her… Read more »

Ho Chi Minh taught Marx to illiterate farmers; I don't think he much cared whether or not their ability to articulate theory using the proper jargon was perfect. I don't know many breadtubers that gatekeep on semantics or have weird classist attitudes (unless you're counting Destiny, which I personally don't) but I think this is a bit of a wakeup call for me to keep my head on a swivel for that kind of crap.

I had a problem with her framing of the video, which to me, seems to only be for clicks (outrage / provocative titles get engagement). For example, if she had her video called, "Why aren't there more People of Color on Lefttube?", who here honestly thinks she would've gotten the same number of views as "Why is LeftTube so white?"…hence my cynicism, and I'm glad you guys had the conversation that she was supposed to have. Now I know it's not a big deal, but it just bothers me that there is the general trend on the Left of wanting… Read more »

Kat's video was, I feel, a great place to start for a larger discussion, and it's not like it can ever be "finished", and nobody has the final say on the issues… if that makes any sense.

Ya damn right having money for cameras and software is an important point!!! I would argue too that some of this craze for Left-Tube might be ignoring some of the older ways. Zines and Blogs at Co-ops were where I got my main fixes. It's so important to emphasize the financial privileges that are required for equipment and software. But they are absolutely not the only way to spread ideas and communicate the issues we have today. I've talked to a few people about how cool it would be to possibly spread the transcripts of some of these videos in… Read more »

Everything in this video (and Kat's points in her video) is spot on in my opinion. But there's a huge aspect that's constantly overlooked from what I can see. I've noticed that a lotta people look at lefty YT and other leftist circles then wonder why it's so "white" and prescribe the root of the problem based on their personal experience or known problems that may logically lead to these things. But when we look for left-wing YTers of color it's not that we see a bunch of small channels putting out great content but flailing and not getting the… Read more »

I’m also amused Angiespeaks assumes that most Black American families don’t put an emphasis on education. Like you’re going to not buy into respectability politics or not, and it sounds to me like you think African migrant descendants care more about education than Black Americans. This is why I feel like within the African diaspora we always end up having diaspora wars because apparently none of us can declare something without assuming something about others in the diaspora. If you’re not, you’re spending a lot of time (granted it seems to be because you wish to explain your perspective and… Read more »

I disagree fundamentally with Angie Speaks mostly because her issues with Black Americans being hyper visible are her issues. We don’t ask for being hyper visible, we don’t try to speak for anyone but ourselves, but yet all non Black Americans (ethnically descendants of American chattel slavery going back generations in the US not necessarily including folks who are a generation back from the Caribbean) in pointing out their issues with their own structures of oppression seem to assign us this power we don’t have. The British media being full of shit and using Sam Jackson to silence British actor… Read more »

10:05 By percentages of total ethnic population, there are more working-class-poor black people than white people. By head-count there are more working-class-poor white people than black people. Don't mean to nitpick, but we are talking about material conditions and need to be as accurate as possible when doing so. This kind of information, especially in this context, can provide very important insight into the world around us. I obviously don't think this statement was made in bad faith, and believe it was likely just been a miscommunication. By the numbers:Whites in poverty in the US – 23.6 millionBlacks in poverty… Read more »

The left (anti-capitalist) position is populated in my experience by either working class people that didn't go far in school yet embraced self learning and college educated people that regardless of class background have some level of privilege and seek to right what they see as unfair conditions in the system. It is not a default position or ideology. A person must work to get there, and even overcome intense personal and social pain to get there. Not everyone has the opportunity to get there; it is rare among college grads and even more so among those without education. Not… Read more »

Small point: 10:20 Angie says black people make up the majority of the poor/worker class in America. 72% of America is white, according to our census (that number includes the Latino population because they are primarily of European descent despite racists usually considering them a separate race) and 13% of America is black.

Even if all or almost all of the black population were poor/working class they would not make up the majority of the working class poor in America.

I have NEVER seen Angie (Speaks) come up in my algorithmic suggestions, DESPITE having already subscribed to her some time ago AND clicked the bell.
This is because of the plethora of whites, and the dearth of blacks – a discrepancy I see as explained by economic reasons first…and here she is saying this very thing as I watch 9:33

Uuuuuuuh, not feeling it dog. Angie Speaks can fuck all the way off if she thinks she can speak for anyone but anarcho communist POC from the UK. She is clueless to African American life and culture as much as I am as to what a black person goes through in London or Quito. If she did she might delve into how our culture and capitalist tendencies are shaped by reconstruction and Jim Crow. Or how entertainment and athletics is the most visible and sometimes viable way to be seen as a human, which usually has a strong financial component… Read more »

Also returning to this once more, I know Kat does not have radicals views and has identified herself as such, but take it from a person who has been watched her work for years, unlike the both of you and Angie, Peter. She is quite anti capitalist. She literally has video explaining what Anarchy is to the masses. It’s really fucking good. And you dismissing her critiques as a liberal is uh- fucking wrong. (I know her critiques can be weaponized by capitalist forces) She literally has a vid dragging liberals as well. She’s just not as open about her… Read more »

Thanks for this discussion, I like Angie’s perspective and I agree…all leftist content is not created equally and therefore part of the reason why they don’t have the exposure. Kat needs to objectively look at her content, she isn’t producing content that is researched, structured and discussing political systems or philosophy. I am a white person who is not formally educated but I want to watch stimulating content that is going to make me question my political and ethical ideas, I care much less about identity. You’re both punk as fuck in your ideas, that’s what I am here for.

Funny to have you speak on this. I am forever grateful to Kat for making the content that she does and informing me about trans issues. And I do want to credit her as one of the first people making quality and engaging content on YouTube against the Alt right. But technically the first person to get my patreon dollars right away and the first person to motivate me to so was Angie. AnCap, brilliant was always snapping my fingers and praise handings in agreement. But yes identity is constructed and can be weaponized by capital. But it IS important.… Read more »

Black people over represented in poor and working class circles….and the English girl nods and agrees? LMAO, We're 87 percent White in the UK, trust me, the working class is predominantly White,by a vast margin, the ones being failed most by society are white working class boys…
This is the shit that comes up when people meld the US and UK situation as though its the same thing…

Angie's opening bit about wanting to be listened to for what you say and not something out of your control, like your race or gender, hit me hard. It resonated even.
A quick search for her channel also yielded results that intrigued me, I have som videos to watch now and am very interested to hear what she has to say.
