Life As A Young and Native American In Trump's USA

Almost three million people currently identify as Native American — despite this, their place in both our history, and the modern day, is largely ignored.

For a century, the U.S government believed what was best for Native American kids was to strip them of their families and communities, their culture and language, their hair and clothes. Now, mounting research has demonstrated how this policy has decimated communities and been deadly to Native peoples. “Identification with a particular cultural background and a secure sense of cultural identity is associated with higher self-esteem, better educational attainment (grades and going to college), and is protective against mental health problems, substance use, and other issues for adolescents and adults,” a summary of research by the National Indian Child Welfare Association stated in 2017.

For 24 year old Delmar, learning about traditional practices is a way to honor her heritage and make sense of her place in the world.

These people are the original, FIRST Americans. ALL Americans need to support, encourage and learn about the history of it's Native Americans FROM THEIR VIEW and as told by their ancestors. Native American spirituality is a million times more superior than any of the ridiculous Abrahamic religions.

Beautiful short documentary, it would be lovely to have a series to learn more about Native American youth.

My family immigrated to America from Italy in 1921… so with that said I have no idea why I have always felt such a strong connection to the Native American people. To me this was the most awful genocide in history. These people were/are actually in tune with the Earth, with Spirit, with Love, with the Heavens, with other life forms, with past lives…with everything that truly matters.
I wish nothing but a huge 'rebirth' for all the Native Tribes, I wish they would become the teachers of the future as they are the only ones with the real answers…

Well I heard Native Americans get $200,000 dollars when they graduate high school while most Americans don't even get a Congratulation cards. It is always important to love your culture and remember where you came from, it does keep you grounded. For every teenagers go through different issues in life no matter what race, color, ethnicity or status they are coming from. It is how you handle the downside of life that makes a person unique and how that person make good options in this game we call life.

In growing up on the Rez, I asked to learn the N. Cheyenne Culture. Back in the day it was to dangerous ask questions. Most forget this fact. Thankfully, I
realized how much is learned by examples in the family and the tribe. I find this video hopeful and honest.

I think you as people must write books about how you are, your culture in general with all details that everybody understand you.

I feel like natives have been longest oppressed and therefore, the most. It's awful. And are still here today.

These people are true fighters.

Native American/Indigenous culture is a miracle. It sucks that people who have Indigenous blood and have lost their culture will probably never know or be able to reconnect with that part of them and the people who do still have that part of their lives, have suffered so much. I am Mexican and Mestizo (which means I'm part Spanish and Indigenous) and my family has lost that part of our culture due to colonization and we've had to kind of rebuild a new one. It makes me feel lost because I have Indigenous blood but I don't know anything about… Read more »

I do not disrespect. But it seems strange that Native Americans speak like normal Americans. I even thought that was cool.

Im so angered by what has been done to this wonderful culture and the amazing generations of people. The world would be a much kinder, selfless, human place is this culture had been allowed to flourish.

As a non-aboriginal person living in Canada, I just want to say that I love and respect the aboriginal cultures of North America. I am so disgusted by the genocide that happened; I feel very strongly about working towards a society where everyone is respected and where healing can be encouraged. I am deeply touched by this documentary and hope that the history and cultures of aboriginals can be represented more in mainstream media. We are all brothers and sisters on this Earth, love has no boundaries <3

Here in Australia, the same things happened to the Indigenous people. I am a black Australian, we didn't want to be slaves, we didn't want any handouts, we didn't want to live on reserves. All we ever wanted was to be included but, alas we were not allowed any opportunity to progress, which is why we see the problems we have today. The people are so lost.
