I think IQ has really increased in the past 50 years, because I can not understand how this is such a long discussion. We like characters like Lara Croft, Sarah Walker, The Bride, O-ren Ishii, Kate Beckett, Abbie Mills, Oliva Dunham, Veronia Mars, Sarah Manning, Sydney Bristow, Kara Thrace, Ripley, Trinity, Princess Leia, River Tam, Nikita because they are equal parts (1) believably badass and (2) smoking hot.

Honestly the game company representatives in that room with Biden are some of the worst of the industry in regards to manipulative business models. Which is part of what's so frustrating about the violence debate that's somehow come back up: it gives the EAs and Zyngas of the world cover to create microtransaction money printers without being critizied for it. I understand this particular exchange took place before the worst of it, but companies are knowingly abusing their customers and all non-gamers point to is the tired violence talking points.

While I suspect many here agree that anyone who supports feminism can call themselves a feminist, there is a loud clique on social media that state being a feminist requires having lived the female experience. These people state anyone who is not biologically female cannot truly understand the motivations of feminists. Some go even further, decrying males as being "the enemy" of women. To these types, males can never be feminists, because they don't understand the stakes involved. If a man wants to be accepted by such individuals, he must adopt the label if "feminist ally". My inference is that… Read more »

I think my problem with "toxic masculinity" as a concept is that it doesn't have a clear border between itself and "healthy" masculinity. So whatever whoever doesn't like about anything men do can be labeled that way and there is no arguing against that. Not if you are the male in question, anyway.Secondary how it is used in current discourse (but especially on the Internet) reminds me of "Female hysteria" of the old days. Not as sexist but used as much to just shut up, disregard and invalidate someone.Again as a man, it is much easier for me to accept… Read more »

"toxic masculinity"is like calling gang violence "toxic blackness". It's just a way to insult men for something all people can do just because they can point to a man who did it. This gender stuff does my head in it's all just dream land

Character design (which includes body types) is often shorthand for a character's personality. For example, in the Soul series of games, the more aggressive women tend to be very busty (Sophitia is an exception, but she also a Mother/Holy Warrior, so the bustiness still applies) characters like Ivy, Taki, Setsuka, etc are very aggressive women looking for a fight. the slimmer women (Seoung Mina, Talim, Amy, Xianghua, etc) are notably less aggressive in personality, and their design is a reflection of that.

note- naturally #notall. Some designs are a subversion (Tira, for example)

it was a mistake to make Movie Capt Marvel a flat stick in the mud, but their only other alternative was to make her Ms. Marvel, aka sexy, powerful, and flawed.

No way in hell they were gonna do that.

1. I'm sorry about Legarto, and I hope that everything goes well with Momo. 2. I can agree with what the comment about guarding emotions from women. I've never had issues any time I was around close male friends. However most of the time with someone I was in a relationship with asked me to open up and talk about how I'm feeling it was weaponized and often used against me for emotional manipulation and emotional abuse. I married my wife because I could be myself, all of myself with her. She's awesome like that. Last year might have been… Read more »

Ok the guy that argued with Melonie deserved it, the moment he tried to cancel her. He pulled a knife. Internet pulled a gun in turn in defense, because he crossed the lines. Its also kinda funny, that he considers himself such an enlightened person, yet is totally ok with saying "my industry". As if he was somehow in control of it. I dont mind saying "my industry". But I personally dont, though for a different reason, since I dont feel that this kind of grouping is healthy. Yet given his reasoning, I kinda doubt that this would be his… Read more »

Probably a long post ahead. Apologies. This does have a point, though. Part of the problem I have with the word "problematic" is that I so often see it used in a kind of, "Ooh, let's all wince and say that such-and-such is *problematic*, and not actually engage with what the actual problem with it might be"… Sometimes because trying to unspool the strands of why the user thinks it's a problem might not cast them in a particularly good light. As long as it remains vague, with the implication that they're sparing someone's feelings, they get some power over… Read more »

I don't know about the Marvel movies. I recognize that there isn't a huge diversity of female characters, but I do believe that there are at least some MCU female characters that aren't in the "strong female character" model. Nebula, Mantis, and Shuri, for example. I think the issue there is that there are just less female characters in total, so if you only have 1-2 per movie when compared to 4-5 men in that same movie, there is less room for one of those to diverge from type (when 3-4 of those men will fit that type). Also, since… Read more »

You make a fair point about Joe Biden's "Little creeps" comment. I too fell victim to that inconsistent behavior. However, if we combine that with his "games teach you how to murder people" argument, then I don't think it's unreasonable to assume he thinks the ENTIRE game industry is full of "little creeps."

I do not expect much from Captain Marvel. She's flat as a character, they're trying for some "every-woman" character. That works for something like Twilight and City of Bones because they are pretty much designed for girls to imagine themselves as the main character. An "every-woman" in a superhero movie is just asking for trouble since you'll alienate too much of an audience. Imagine if Tank Girl tried to make their protag a flat every-woman and you'd have a completely forgettable character rather than a brash heroine that has more in common with Harley Quinn than the MCU Captain Marvel.

Totally understand not doing the stream after Lagarto. All my hugs.
On the topic of men not being open around women it is definitely my experience that many of the men I know choose to be more closed off around women who they aren't especially close to but may open up as they get close to them. Even with men who don't close themselves off with women, many men simply aren't as comfortable socializing with women as they know the social dynamics and expectations of women are often different and aren't as adept at navigating those different social dynamics.

Well, yeah, diversity in personality is important. But, up until the point in question, and immediately after that specific point, you weren't talking about personality. You were talking about body types. You spent the first three minutes of the video (not including the personal update) describing, in detail, Lara Croft's appearance now v. then, and what you liked and didn't like about it. Up until the MCU example, your point was body type and appearance. Up until then, you had been talking about physical representations, even separating the physical from personality by saying, "body image and sexuality…not the same thing."… Read more »

I never know how to respond to these things other than to speak historically. Being trans I grew up male, but I'm transitioning to female presentation. In a way, I'll never really relate to either sex. It's always an eggshells endeavour to speak about experience in the current trans community. To speak on issues experienced, as a male, to defend or explain others actions can get you labled as "not really trans" and attacked as all kinds of things, much the same way folks were pounced on during GG. Yet trying to speak on women's issues always feels disingeuous because… Read more »

Liana, if you want just the tiniest glimpse into the male life that you can be sure isn't biased…I have a Contrapoints video for you. She's trans M>F and she discusses her perspective on some of the differences in how she was treated. It's just a tiny look into the world of how it feels to be treated as a man and she covers plusses and minuses both. https://youtu.be/S1xxcKCGljY?t=514

My sincere condolences regarding Lagarto. I hope you're coping okay during this tough time. xox On the relevant topic of Men's Issues… Have you read J. Michael Straczynski's autobiography “Becoming Superman”? I can't recommend it enough. I just finished reading the audio-book version read by Peter Jurasik and it was one of the most deeply moving, and painful journeys of a struggling writer through adversity. His problems growing up came from his awful family circumstances of bitter poverty and violence mostly due to his manipulative and terribly abusive father. Throughout Joe's troubled childhood he discovers a far more respectable father… Read more »

I really dislike the term "toxic masculinity" because its usage today is so deviated from its origin. Today everything from chivalry to any traditional version of masculinity is insulted as "toxic". And its usage as an simple way to insult man and silence them in discussions is just blatantly disheartening .

I’m curious about how men feel about objectification when it’s directed at them. For example did the objectification of Garelt in the witcher 3 made men uncomfortable? How did they feel about all the bathtub memes.

I agree all science denial is a problem but let us keep things in order: bullshitting about vaccines or climate change kills people. even flat out wrong things about video games are closer to a pineapple-on-pizza opinion than climate change denial.

And i thought hell would freeze over twice before I come out and say something remotely in support of Joe freaking Biden.

First of all, woo shoutout lol. Good response to the biden thing, 100% agree :). Regarding women getting people fired over faux feminism. Look into the F1 Grid Girls. These were women happy with their jobs who spoke out to defend them, even the women drivers defended them. They got fired anyways. Then the companies pulled another PR move afterwards to get kids involved (for appearances of course) and eventually after over a year we're in a weird area of "grid girls are kind of back but not really so they tried to weave around it but many women still… Read more »

10:20 I don't see what all the fuss is about when it comes to OG Lara! When it comes to action-hero types of character, especially way back then, it's safe to say that there was some exaggeration to a few or all of their traits; exaggerated body types, exaggerated masculine/feminine traits, a larger than life personality, badassery to the maximum and zero fucks to give!! And, in my opinion, that's completely fine. They weren't meant to represent real people but human concepts that would provide some good old-fashioned escapism from reality in an entertaining medium, interactive or otherwise. She had big… Read more »
