Looks like we need to do a better job at making it clear that gaming isn't just for kids. The rating system should have been enough, but people are ignoring it. If the kids are playing these kinds of games, then it's the parents fault for letting them do it. GameStop employees explain the reasons why it's rated M in front of them, yet they still get it for them.

Not to drag EA even into this, but I'v seen how some disturbing people easily found ways to abuse, torture and kill any Sim in The Sims games regardless if that Sim was a kid, adult or old person… It wasn't intended design of the game in any way. This people exhibited all or most warning signs as kids (torturing and killing animals for one example), yet as adults they don't kill people – torture of Sims and really violent bloody gory games keeps them non-violent to real people and animals trough their adult years. Also keeps them out of… Read more »

So domestic abuse is not ok for gaming, but killing people is ok for gaming.

ok.

Well, if that's so they should also ban movies and books that depict the child abuse and other sensitive stuff. Because you know… Books and movies are also entertainment.

i played resident evil 1 when i was 5 years old and i'm still fine. i didn't understand it at the time and replayed it when i was 10 years old. i'm 21 years old now and i didn't become a psycho , child abuser or murderer

The argument that kids might see this isn't a fair one since it is an age restricted title; if kids have it, it's the fault of the parent or guardian. The argument that this crosses a line is also unjustified seeing as how violence and sexual content has existed in other games plenty of times, and if we were to restrict any content some were vocally upset about then 99% of games would be gone. The game doesn't endorse child abuse, it just has it inside the narrative. At the end of the day, the people asking for this or… Read more »

As someone who had a stepdad who was extremely physically abusive to me and my mother I'd be extremely upset if this was taken out of this game. I believe purpose of art is to draw out our emotions and I think this game is going to be an extremely good story if its left uncensored and allowed to portray the story its trying to. Let creators create anything they want and if you don't agree with it don't buy it.

Oh jeesh, a mature game that tackles mature topics? This is too much, fiction cannot handle mature topics! … Seriously, what the hell?

This kinda bothers me. Like, I really think it's actually a GOOD THING to tackle these subjects in video games, provided it's done in the right manner. I honestly believe being able to explore such horrible things is an important way to understand them; by having a stake in them (i.e., controlling the character on either end) you get insight into the problems which you otherwise might not have gotten. And that lets us have a discussion we otherwise couldn't have. As far as I'm concerned, video games which accurately represent these situations are a part of the intellectual discussions… Read more »

what about every movie that deals with this sort of thing? Should we pull them from the shelves?

"Domestic violence is not a game and this simply trivializes it."
So what about themes of war, murder, and non-domestic violence? Let's ban Pokemon because animal abuse isn't a game either.

Do government officials not read books anymore? I still do and come across text that depicts aspects of criminal actions (in detail) carried out by characters in the story . Yet i have not heard calls to change the subject matter in them. Is it just because a video game is a visual representation of a narrative that can depict violence or sexual content? Last time i checked the only time you have to provide a form of personal identification and age verification (18 years of age minimum) for a printed piece of media is one of pornographic material. How… Read more »

you can't say poop using Xbox, which becomes quite a problem when you are say, farming in ark… I play in the adult "zone" yet they like to censor language enough that you can't name a sign or chest "for poop" or message people "can you poop?" i wonder is there a situation where the word poop can be really used offensively?

Censorship doesn't stop violence "Period". Neither did borders, segregation, or laws. To stop violence you have to challenges people's inner nature, and support change for the better. If a child is playing a Rated "M" game, it's the parents fault, no one else. If a child abuser, abuses a child, it wasn't the game, they have always been a child abuser. History has proven before Technology, violence has been acted upon humans by other humans, even more so on relatives. Games, movies, music, poetry, stories, has connected more people and saved more lives because a victim has found strength when… Read more »

Video games are the most advanced forms of story telling we currently have, and as sad a child abuse is, storyies of child abuse are definately stories that need to be shared.

I played Halo CE on my cousin's xbox and the Punisher game on ps2 before I hit 10 years old and I'm not a crazed murder psycho. People would rather blame games and movies other than you know, bad parenting or actual anger problems that can be solved if taken care of at a young age.

So a movie can have child abuse, someone can make a sculpture of child abuse, but nobody can have it in a videogame? We're supposed to close our eyes and say lalala and pretend that child abuse doesn't exist?

There are some really fuxxing stupid people out there basically saying this: "Your medium is considered a joke and cant handle serious subject matter like films do. Yes, I understand context but since your medium is a joke, I'm too lazy to consider context"

Do we also censor movies and television shows from showing child or domestic abuse? Why does a computer game get censored more when it is only available to those with a particular platform as apposed to those that can watch a violent TV show every night. Its clear the objective is to protect the girl and even if someone chose not to do that how is it any different from burning a family home in the Sims?

replace the word "video game" with the word "movie" in damian's response… like wtf, we're talking about a game that is specifically marketed to adults.

Sony better not puss out. This game's first trailer in 2015 (FINALLY a game with Kara!) is what made me decide to finally invest in a PS4.

I would never play a game where the protagonist is an abuser. I'm not one of these people and something like this will strongly put me off as I simply cannot relate, and find other parties doing this abhorrent.

When you say "other outlets as well, including The Sun", Which The Sun do you mean? If you mean the UK tabloid The Sun, it might be worth noting that The Sun is actually held in lower regard than The Daily Mail in the UK. In fact, there are parts of the UK that actively boycott The Sun because of its incendiary and inaccurate reporting of some major events here.

Two parts of this subject: 1) It looks like Detroit: Becoming Human made the "Thirteen Reasons Why" Mistake. Where Thirteen Reasons Why talked to people dealing with teen suicide… and those agencies told the people making it a long list of things to not do–and they used that as a checklist (while doing the exact opposite of the things they said they should do). Much like how Thirteen Reasons Why became a love note to how awesome committing suicide is… it seems like Detroit: Becoming Human also, according to the advocacy groups, is pulling the "Thirteen Reasons Why" issues. 2)… Read more »

With their logic movies can never show abusive images. Change their argument from video games to any artform and do u hear any outrage on that respective artform?

Haprilona

We saw same stuff happen with FFXV when Lunafreya's abuse scene seen in the Dawn trailers was removed. I really hope this won't repeat with Detroit, since I'm really looking forward to the game and would hate to see meaningful scenes censored because of people who can't seperate games from reality. Like… Nobody's censoring this stuff in books, so why is it only in visual media that people make such a fuss?

I've had no problems with violent games, it's things like Crash and the Impossible Game that bring out the worse in me!
