Russia: Unauthorised rallies against retirement age rise take place in Russia

Several thousands of people took part in rallies organised by supporters of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, across Russia on Sunday.

The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed that more than 100 people were arrested at the Saint Petersburg and Moscow protests. Neither had been granted permission by city authorities. Arrests were also made during unsanctioned rallies in Yekaterinburg and Novosibirsk.

Russian government proposed a plan to increase the retirement age from 60 to 65 by 2028 for men and from 55 to 63 for women by 2034.

Russian President Vladimir Putin softened the initial plan to raise women’s retirement age to 63.
