Social distancing during coronavirus, explained by an expert

To fight coronavirus, we need to change how we live.

Read more about the coronavirus pandemic at http://vox.com/coronavirus

“Social distancing,” also called physical distancing, is the best way to slow the spread of coronavirus and save lives in your community. It means leaving home as little as possible, keeping six feet away from others in public, and generally just limiting in-person social contact. But the rules of social distancing can be sort of blurry and confusing. Can you have close friends over for dinner? Can you visit relatives? Can you get on a plane if you’re wearing a face mask? What is life even supposed to look like without social contact?

We spoke with University of Pennsylvania social epidemiologist Carolyn Cannuscio about how we should think about social distancing, and what measures we should each be taking to do our part in slowing down the pandemic. Practicing social distancing properly isn’t easy, she says. But it’s also the best thing that each of us can do right now in the service of public health.

The last thing she was saying is the problem though, all the jokes aside from some of the comments. How will you know the end and you go back to normal? Eventually the cases will curb and the percentage of growth of incidents will go down but that’s because so many will have contracted the disease while the opportunity to spread it I’d lessened, we go back to normal in six months and it only takes one person with a virulent strain to pass it on. Whss as t fin as lily stopped the 1928 flu was essentially everyone got… Read more »

Here’s the thing the US should have done social distancing earlier. The time is almost up we can’t shut down the country for too much longer I’m sorry, if it’s not the plague life still has to move on.

2m distance determines our existence, even though it's awful for social creatures.
Physical Distancing = Social Distancing, in many ways. Let's keep phoning, videoing, and chatting, but ultimately those are just imitations. Keep trying anyway.
Maybe society will come out of this with some genuine compassion for loneliness, because it was a major problem before and it's a massive waste of human wellness.

imagine the people with very little family or who don't like their family or no friends. Yikes. I guess we all practice social distancing to some extent depending on your daily lifestyle. This great if you have an online following or friends to FaceTime or whatever. Most days I'm just sitting in the house reading reddit forms or twitter to feel like I'm a part of something lol… but alas I will just try to learn or do a hobby

People are becoming so ridiculous that now we have “experts” on social distancing… this is not new… social distancing became a thing when facebook came into the picture. Not long ago you could go to a restaurant and no one was talking to each other. That’s social distancing.

I want to do all of that and I understand how important it is … but as a dance teacher choreographer I really don t know how it s going to work. I haven't figured out right way that will allow to do my work without any contact with dancers … The technology available right now doesn't work for us dancers choreographers … People in that field of work where physical contact is a must have no way to turn … we are totally lost … We can only hope that situation won't last too long …
