Well isn’t this interesting… a $2000 dollar Linux phone. Yeah, that is three zeros and I must say this phone… is different.

My Asus zenfone 4 max has a 4200 Mah battery and lasts for a week between charges. Cost me $229 Canadian. Works great.

Seems to me they're aiming at corporations but not locking it into that in case some consumers are anal enough to want it for themselves. Seems they don't ever want to offer different options for different people, actually a big plus in my eyes.

And no, I didn't buy this, are you insane? I got the $699 model, having it be made in USA isn't important to me so I won't. Is the existence of the option really so dramatic? I don't think so.

@chris I do not think Government will be interested, you cannot use any existing software on it, speak: No iOS, Android Apps, so you would need to hire in app devs just for that and also get them acquainted to Linux. That costs a lot of money. Plus then you are on an open source track, which might limit what you can do without disclosing your work according to the various OS licenses.

All this video had is "Not gonna buy this 2000$ phone"

I clicked this video hoping to see a twist or some crazy specs like a phone with an Ac or washing machine inbuilt. But No.

Iv'e been waiting years for this, price point is way too high. Ever since early 2000 all i have wanted is a damn Linux PDA that can do voice and video calls. no app stores, no smart shit just a vanilla freaking PDA that just happens to allow calls. I hope they sell enough to eventually bring the price down for us. For now i just might make some bulky pi phone out of legos… 😀

They really raise the price? For those specs its a horrible performance per dollar here. I'd rather use that money on a high end PC build… At least we can hope this initiative will start alternatives. I would NOT spend that much on a subpar phone just because it's open. I'm disappointed.

I read somewhere that a guy could buy a cheap phone and flash it with open source Linux. Anyone else heard this? I'd love to have complete access to my phone, ability to use keyboard and mouse, full USB functionality for devices and write capability ( not offered on android). Another feature to have is a mixer, so I can playback a recording and have a caller hear the recording, ability to record any phone conversation.. Full access to all components like over or under clocking, file permission modifications, installation of any software you want without the need for reporting… Read more »

I didn't think the US had enough industry left to fabricate a screen. As an excuse to subsidize local manufacturing, yeah, this would make a good government pork program.

A product for the masses, priced for the elite. A total slap in the face for the whole open source community.

Boeing sells a "black" secure android phone for the government market for a lot cheaper.

As others have said, this thing only exists for US government contracts.

All smartphone company's are a scam, heck, I even use a smartphone making this comment.

Maybe I'd spent $1000 on an iPhone, the rest I will buy dongles.
