Hey man, you've gotta have your own branding. Don't feel bad about using your made up words with your name in them. I think they're witty and set you apart. Don't let that one idiot get you down dude! They're just mad they didn't come up with them 🙂

For Chinese audience, it lacks diversity. Let me explain….
Asians dont like seeing Asians in American films. Asia (unlike America) isnt a "Melting pot". Its 90% asian. With every Asian production being predominantly Asian. So when a movie comes from overseas, Chinese audiences want to see other faces than their own. Its quite fascinating.

Prometheus (the 'Alien' franchise film) to me had one of the best depictions of Interstellar and religion relations. Shaw was contacted by an alien species who created man-kind.. they were real Gods in every way however Shaw now knowing the truth.. (I recall) she held her cross close to her chest. In the scene she was choosing to not accept the way things are and believe – devote herself to her faith she's always known. I thought it was quite beautiful. That film has many flaws however I enjoyed that concept. I think many individuals who have strong faith may… Read more »

I think The Farewell and Crazy Rich Asians speak mostly to asian americans and americans in general. There is no magic formula to marketing western goods in china. Many have failed and licked their wounds. China is a sophistcated and complicated country. Marketers see 1.4 billion people and think it's an easy sale. Chna, India, and Nigeria have a film industry that thrives outside of the hollywood bubble. As a chinese immigrant from Canada, I find asian american creators who tackle asianess in america tend to be preachy and recycle the all too familiar family drama and cultural values. The… Read more »

Further to the Dune discussion, I’m very curious about how the movie will address the Fremen.
I mean, they’re basically the Taliban in space. How do you make them palatable for an American audience without completely removing the “Jihad” factor?

The question of religion in an interstellar setting is an interesting one.
I’d always assumed that different species would default to a secular attitude in order to do business together, but there’s every chance it might not work out that way.
Religion is clearly important to the Fremen of Arrakis, for example, and their faith is reinforced by their environment.
Outside forces seek to exploit it, but as it turns out, it not so clear which culture is exploiting which.

Well, Chinese people living in China are not Chinese-Americans, obviously. They don't share the same family history, and they have different troubles and daily-life problems than Chinese-Americans. So they do not feel they belong to the same "race", nor they feel represented by Chinese-Americans. I am Italian, and do not feel that Italian-American movies represent me in the slightest. People who were born in the US, did not live in Italy, cannot speak Italian, do not know shit about Italian history or current state of affairs, do not have an Italian passport, are not Italian. They are Italian-Americans. And they… Read more »

Farewell is more of a Chinese American movie, so it wasn’t necessarily targeted at the Chinese audience.

Whoever wrote the letter explaining that Kylo killing Rey's parents didn't make sense is 100% correct. That would be monumentally stupid if that were to be the case in Episode 9 and it would sour me on the entire film. More than TROS already soured me lol.

Chinese people are not stupid and know when they are pandered to. Hollywood doesn't care about China, nor anyone else for that matter, as long as the money's there, they'll make whatever. The same Hollywood that made pro Tibet movies and had Dalai Lama at every possible event, now all of a sudden cares about Chinese sensibilities? Ricky Gervais was spot on during his Golden Globes speech.

Hey Rob:Great conversation, as always. I am from cosmopolitan Boston but have lived in multicultural Singapore (Chinese, Malays, Indians, Filipinos, Indonesians, Europeans, Australians and Americans) and worked across Asia for well over a decade. Asians cannot be grouped together as Japanese, Vietnamese, Thais and Chinese, for example, share very little in common.I watched the animated version of Mulan last week and cringed at how non-Chinese it is. To think, that IP was the centerpiece of Hong Kong Disneyland at opening, is laughable after my experience with the culture, now. How they will react to the 2020 remake is anyone’s guess…I… Read more »

The Chinese seem to love the action adventure/shoot'em ups.
Artsy films with deep stories don't seem to interest them.

I am quite sure Professor Rob that Dr. Casper would be very impressed with what you are doing on your channel. Like Drew you are passing on your love and knowledge not just about movies with capes and tights and space ships but cinema which tells stories about the human condition, of which All About Eve illuminates so brilliantly. I think Dr Casper is giving that knowing nod to you right now Professor Rob.

A very interesting topic. Americans seem to not understand the world in terms of culture of people outside the US. Compared to asian audiences, Americans are ignorant of many things. The reason why Chinese audiences reject movies centered around Chinese-americans is because the said movies are slewed more towards American sensibilities & audiences. Hollywood is interested in creating stories for China lot more these days. Chinese investors have been busy in the the entertainment industry over the years especially in the north American market, it's not very surprising how lot more movies are made for the Chinese audiences.
