As a result of ever increasing political polarisation, a gap has opened up in the British centreground. With the formation of new centrist groups like Change UK (formerly The Independent Group) somewhat echoing the Group of Four, and the continued presence of the Liberal Democrats, we ask: what does the future of the British centre-ground look like? Will this be a radical transformation of British politics or yet another failed attempt to break the two-party system?

SPEAKERS

Sir Vince Cable MP: MP for Twickenham and Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Britain’s largest pro-European and centrist party, Sir Vince recently said the Liberal Democrats are open to cooperating with Change UK.

Ryan Wain: Wain is the CEO of United for Change, a centrist political movement founded in August 2018 which seeks to “promote long-term solutions to the UK’s problems”.

ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world’s most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

We surely need a credible liberal, meaning: classic liberal / social democrat, option in UK politics. Currently the world is being hijacked by the right who are intent on widening the gap between rich and poor, whilst ignoring the environment.

Oh vince, maybe it would help you 'reclaim the center ground' if you and youre party werent just poorly disguised leftists pandering to social justice bollocks, the overton window has shifted so far left that noone seems to understand what the fucking center even is anymore

So Vince Cable wants a supply and demand arrangement with the Tories – well – would tolerate one – how much for? $10 billion – I doubt whether the Lib Dems could negotiate that much for themselves. Also, will he and they then stop criticising the DUP for taking money for their support? I doubt it. This is why the Lib Dems are toast. History will see the Liberals as the cause of a lot the trouble in the world in the future.

These companies like Innocent and Love Film – they are the ones who have been side lining ordinary English people from the provinces for Europeans – whose governments have paid well for their education – at the same time benefitting from the tax breaks that being in England offer.
That guy from Liverpool does not stand a chance – sorry.

People are fed up from liberal democrats. Our culture is being enough change by mass migration of Arabs and south Asian ethnicities with completely unliberal and unbritish views and lifestyle!
England is the home of English people. If any person across the globe wants to claim it his home, our culture will vanish!

So Vince implies being in the middle as meaning not being able to make up your mind about things? Haha. But he describes himself as centrist, after going through all his lefty stances?

Social-Culture-Economy-Politic upheavals that some call "movements" must be catalyzed throw philosophy, worldview, and a little bit of oracle futurism into concrete policy making.

What most of us dont comprehend is that our previous axioms are being torn apart and we have to find the new ones to hold us.

All that while delivering "happiness" and "fulfillment".

Tough job mate!

LOL – I used to respect you Vince Cable – even though I have never been a Liberal Democrat I did vote in Tom Brake for local councillor. How your party can call itself liberal let alone democratic is beyond me. You are an absolute national disgrace, your leader Jo Swinson says she would not honour a second referendum if Leave won again.

Vince Cable – so not very liberal or democratic after all. I doubt whether he would be asking for fundamental change had he won. The British electorate can see through this and will not be voting for them – maybe a few flowers in Cheltenham and Bath.
